i’d like to throw a party when all of this is over. a big one - one to make up for everyone’s quarantine birthdays and missed christmases and thanksgivings and new years and new babies and anniversaries and breakups and promotions and new jobs and all the other milestones that got swallowed up by the pandemic. you are all invited. here’s my plan for the party.
(this plan takes place in a world in which i have an unlimited party budget, by the way, because it’s way more fun to imagine that way)
i want to rent the event space above the pizza place near my house. they do catering and make really good food, so i would just have them take care of the space and the snacks.
i would make sure there were enough pizzas for everybody & all their dietary restrictions. i’d also get some other food - maybe a couple platters of their other options so people could make a plate. i want this party to start early and go late, so nobody has to “grab dinner first”. i want to optimize our time together, so dinner and dessert will be provided. if you need lactose or digestive enzymes in order to fully enjoy the spread, they will be available.
there will be drinks too! there would be a bartender serving a signature cocktail (alcoholic and non alcoholic), and then just a bunch of buckets with beers and wines and san pels/la croixes that folks can self serve. i’d also make sure there was lots of water AND hot coffee available to offset the booze if things got a lil dicey for some people.
dress code? as fancy as you want. wear a tux, wear jeans or wear sweats. i don’t care - dress up or down as much as you feel. it’s YOUR party afterall!
start time? the party will start with an extremely family friendly hour, around 4:30 pm, because none of our kids have gotten to hang out and none of us have gotten to squeeze each other’s kids this whole time. there will be toys to play with, there will be a pizza party & ice cream sundae bar and there will be a kids dance party until 7 pm. is it your kid’s bedtime then? def send em home with a goodie bag filled with stickers and treats to a sitter and come back when they’re down - we’ll be partying for a while! you won’t miss anything!
is your kid old enough to hang longer? they can totally stay! think of this like a wedding reception. it’s all ages.
the music? glad you asked. why, we’re only playing the hits of course! people are going to be arriving amidst a full on kids dance party, so it’ll be good vibes right off the bat. might quiet things down around dinner/arrival time so people can mingle and catch up, but after enough people have eaten i’ll probably do a little speech/toast/tight 5 and then turn it over to our surprise live musical guests who will be this UNREAL cover band i went and saw a bunch of times before lockdown called the 99s.
at this point we’ve set up the chip & snack bar which also features a bowlful of tiny joints for whoever wanted one because why not! there will also be party hats and noise makers because GUESS WHAT! at midnight, we’re counting down! just for fun.
after their set(s), there will be…MORE dancing! this is when shit really pops off. all the hits we’ve been dying to dance/scream sing to will be played. the chromatica into 911 moment we’ve all been waiting for. it’s all going to happen, and it will be cathartic.
when it’s time to go, we will play closing time and all sing along. then everyone can grab an adult goodie bag on the way out! it includes: a bottle of coconut water, a slice of fresh pizza from the restaurant, a chewable pepto bismol if you need it, a red gatorade & 2 advils for tomorrow morning, and an IRL hug from yours truly. then we will scatter into the night with a tum full of pizza, a phone full of blurry photos. just the best.
thanks for coming to the party! i hope you had fun!
xoxo,
kt.
